Electric Light Parade

The holiday season is usually very busy so I’m just now getting around to writing the blog post on the Brigade’s participation in the 2021 Los Alamos Winterfest.

Los Alamos county hosted Winterfest the first weekend of December 2021. Part of Winterfest has traditionally included a Holiday Lights Parade. The 2021 theme was “TV and Holiday Film.” I’m not sure we stuck too well to that theme, however, all the candy canes and lollipops on our trucks could tie to such movies as “Candy Cane Christmas.” Regardless we all had fun decorating and driving all three of our trucks in the parade. We had plenty of lights stored at CD-1 to decorate the two old fire engines. Rescue didn’t need any lights with all its emergency flashers!

People in the 1920’s must have been much tougher – notice the open air cab on our 100 year old 1921 LaFrance fire engine. I dressed warm in anticipation of the wind-chill I would experience driving it downtown.

The LaFrance ready to run the parade. The LaFrance is challenging to drive. Ignition advance is controlled with a manual lever, no steering box means lots of muscle needed to steer and double clutching is required to shift the no synchromesh transmission.
